THE WHISTLEBLOWER WHO CRACKED THE BIGGEST SCANDAL IN UK LEGAL HISTORY Richard Roll fujitsu worked on the Horizon system. In 2015 he went on BBC Panorama and told them Fujitsu engineers had remote access to subpostmaster accounts and could change the numbers in secret. Post Office called that impossible. It was their entire defence. 700 people had already been prosecuted on the back of it. Post Office response: send lawyers to intimidate the journalists' sources. Hide Roll's identity from them. Call it a briefing. Call it protecting the brand. Roll gave evidence in the 2019 High Court case. It helped prove the system was defective. Convictions started falling. Since the ITV drama aired, Fujitsu has collected around £510 million in new UK government contracts. Victims are still waiting for compensation. One man spoke up in 2015. This was the first time outsiders knew for a fact the Post Office was lying. So it is unfair to criticise Keir Starmer and Ed Davey who were out of the picture in August 2015. By then the Conservatives were in charge. And they gave Paula Vennels a gong.

That is the exact window when the organisation was busy defending itself against the subpostmasters it had already destroyed. In 2024 the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry asked her to come and explain herself. She said no. She offered a written statement instead and argued too much time had passed for her memory to matter. Inquiry chair Sir Wyn Williams offered to pay her flights and hotel from Australia where she now lives. She still refused, in person or by video link. He admitted publicly that forcing her back would need a criminal conviction and possibly extradition. That process would outlast most subpostmasters patience for justice. So she walked. Now the Solicitors Regulation Authority SRA has referred her to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal. The allegation covers April to July 2024, when she failed to cooperate fully with the Inquiry. She is also named as a significant individual in the Metropolitan Police investigation Operation Olympos. When BBC cameras doorstepped her about documents suggesting the Post Office lied about knowing Horizon was faulty, her answer was no comment. A strong move from someone who used to run a legal team built on telling the public the opposite. Over 900 subpostmasters were wrongly prosecuted between 1999 and 2009 because of broken Fujitsu software. Lives and marriages were wrecked while people in her position drafted the legal advice that kept the lie standing. It didn't. It's been ongoing since 1999 when the Horizon system was introduced. The convictions were only overturned in 2021. 🔹Sunak said "interim payments of up to £600,000". Wrong. For those wrongly convicted and sent to jail there has been a full and final offer of £600,000. Take it or leave it. Their story is truly unimaginable and yet it has happened...and for hundreds of others it's still going on...
