This line resonates deeply because it encapsulates the pain so many young people in Kerala and across the country are forced to endure. Faced with a bleak future, yet burdened with pressure, our youth are turning to drugs as a coping mechanism. We must do more to give them hope, support and purpose and work together to save our children from the perils of drug abuse.

Today, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking - 2026, I had the honour of inaugurating the Anti-Drug Awareness Week organised by the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate at the ICCC, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. The fight against drugs is not just a police priority it is a societal responsibility. I want to be very clear, the deadline is now. I have asked every officer, from Home Guard level to DGP, to remain committed to this fight so that our own children do not fall prey to it. What was once a transit point for drug trafficking has now become a consumption zone. Post-COVID, drug consumption has risen in both urban and rural areas. Our children are being targeted traffickers are going as far as mixing narcotics in chocolates and biscuits to hook young minds. This is nothing short of an anti-national activity. This is more dangerous than terrorism or Naxalism today and we must treat it with the same urgency. If there is no demand, there will be no supply. Reducing demand is our collective responsibility. I took an oath today along with my officers and the students present eradicating drugs is our priority, and EAGLE Force is in full action. We are working in close coordination with the School Education Department, DRI, Enforcement Directorate, and Customs to tackle this at every level. The Education Department has been asked to establish Anti-Drug Safety Clubs in every educational institution. Schools that fail to comply will risk losing their recognition. I urge every parent to monitor their children closely, and appeal to families and society to help rehabilitate addicts through de-addiction centres. Keeping our youth away from drugs is the foundation for a golden future of our nation. The local and international drug and underworld mafia are so strong that governments must be equally strong to dismantle both for the safety and well-being of their nations. Today, we too are facing a rise in murders linked to organized crime, while large-scale drug detections continue. As a nation, we must confront and dismantle these threats. As the opposition, we stand ready to assist the government in any decision it takes in its war on drugs. Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte launched a full-scale war on drugs in his own country. Although his arrest today is widely discussed, it should not discourage governments from continuing their fight against drugs or allow them to fall prey to external interference. As a responsible opposition, we should support the government in achieving this.

One reason I hate the glorification of drug dealing in movies, TV & music is because I understand that one of the main purposes behind flooding our community with drugs was to legally reproduce slavery. I don’t condemn people who sold drugs. I understand #ADOS have limited choices. But having sold drugs is something to be mourned, grieved, and regretted—not glorified & celebrated. Drug dealers are pawns in a deadly & racist scheme. There’s nothing heroic about it.
