It’s insane how much better this sequence is shot, edited, and choreographed than almost anything in The Matrix Resurrections. The camera moves with the actors, the cuts match the choreography, and the action actually flows. Outside of the CG effects, it’s mostly practical stuntwork. And here’s the wild part:...

The chateau fight still looks expensive because the camera is in the fight instead of cutting around it.

That hallway fight still looks like a masterclass because the camera is in the fight instead of commenting on it. Resurrections had the budget. The original had Yuen Woo-ping, Chad Stahelski in the trenches, and people who understood that every cut should land like a punch. John Wick didn’t invent that language. It inherited it.

Did you know that the actual Merovingian dynasty developed a reputation as “the Do-nothing Kings”? As a family didn’t like rocking the boat in world affairs, and were competent delegators in how they ran early France, but the rise of Islam rocked the boat for them. Their failure to follow up decisively on their General Charles The Hammer’s victory at repelling the Islamic invasion eventually led to their overthrow by his grandson, Charlemagne. “The Merovingian” in the Matrix series in many ways follows his namesakes’ example in his “do-nothing” approach to life.

The Wick DNA isn’t a coincidence, it’s the same school of thought leaving the Matrix and going looking for a new classroom.

The Chad Stahelski connection really explains why The Matrix and John Wick share that precision in their action.

That hallway fight still hits different. Camera actually moves with Neo instead of cutting every second.

Once I learned Stahelski was Keanu’s double and Woo-ping was the common thread, I started watching both franchises differently.

I used to watch this movie, and the fights were cool, but now I see one thing, it shows how the ancient world was destroyed, and even the statues

Every now and then, people return to this scene. Undoubtedly, it is YWP’s—and his team’s—best work in Hollywood.

If Neo is able to use the Force (telekinesis) to make those 2 smaller swords fly into his hands, why doesn’t he use it more often? Would be useful in disabling opponents or keeping a door open in key moments. 🧐
