It’s interesting how much people suddenly care about cheating in school. Research from Stanford Graduate School of Education shows that the level of cheating in US high schools hasn't changed with the intro of generative AI tools. Moral of story: cheating is a cultural issue not a technological one.

@StanfordEd 100% and in that one study (also cited in my book) the numbers either did not change or actually went down slightly. To blame it on anything other than a learning cultural reason is to be intentionally obtuse.

@StanfordEd It is amazing to me how much we are invested in keeping students from cheating using electronics and technology. It seems like the energy would be much better spent by focusing on creating authentic learning experiences that the students have to personalize.

@StanfordEd Perhaps I was naive as a HS student in the '80's, but as far as I could tell there was not a culture of cheating. By the time I began teaching in the 2000's, it was everywhere and not just the "bad students". Tech gives new methods, but it is a morality problem in our culture.

@StanfordEd Cheaters seem to be a certain personality type. When I was in high school in the 80s, I had friends who consistently cheated and got away with it. These same friends are now multi-millionaires. Yes, it is a cultural problem but not a school problem.
