It's not called river Congo. It's called THE CONGO Because it's not a river, it's a moving lake, the largest widest and deepest moving water on earth. It can provide hydro power to the whole continent

Why hasn’t it provided the hydro power to the whole of Africa?

@MaryK2022 let’s not blame foreign interference in 2026, because we invite them to our home (read countries). lack of vision yes.

The Grand Inga Dam would supply power equivalent HALF of total current Africa power usage today. But it would require Usd 100 B to build. Which is just about Usd 2B per country. But this may never get built due to corruption. DRC with its mineral wealth could THEORETICALLY fund this with internal resources. Key word THEORETICALLY

It can provide like only 200k Megawatts that can only power central africa and some part of South Africa but if added with river zambezi we might be able to get 350k megawatts to 400k and that will be able to power the full continent.

The Grand Inga Hydropower project is estimated to yield 40,000megawatts. Potentially the largest hydropower project in the world.

It's not a lake. Literally, it has been scientifically and geographically categorised as a river. So it can rightly be called River Congo even if y'all would prefer it be called The Congo.

With all its resources Congo has the potential to be the richest country in Africa. But bad politics = poverty.

African countries need to start thinking about self funding large projects. Example #GERD in #Ethiopia 100% funded by #Ethiopians

I have visited Inga Falls hydro power plant near Matadi and the proposed site for the Grand Inga Falls dam , which by design , has double the capacity of the 3 Gorges dam ( 42 GW). That alone, is enough to power the entire Sub Saharan Africa. Africa has abundant resources.

A lake by definition is a standing body of water surrounded by land, so it’s obviously not a lake, it’s a very large river.

The Congo is truly a massive force of nature, though it is technically classified as a river rather than a lake because of its unidirectional, downstream flow. The 'moving lake' description is a great metaphor for its scale, though!
