There's a chance this joke was also inspired by the fact there was an amazing true-to-the-broadway-musical ending to Little Shop of Horrors where Audrey 2 wins and we get amazing miniature and puppet work but it was scrapped in favor of a sucky happily ever after ending.

It’s genuinely insane how well this has aged. The writers never could have guessed their messianic abilities to predict slop 30 years in advance.

Still criminal this series never got the success it deserved. I'd take The Critic getting +20 seasons over The Simpsons at any day.

Ah, The Critic. A smart show with razor sharp writing that did what, and I will say this again because it's 100% true. many shows even today can't, make The Simpsons, GOLDEN era Simpsons, look dull and low IQ by comparison.

The character is a parody of Ted Turner, who caused significant controversy when he began colorizing b&w movies for broadcast on the Turner Classic Movies channel. The writers pumped up this quaint initial concern to it's logical limit, and absolutely nailed it.
