Jordy: I think what we’re seeing here is a clear separation from the pack — who the players are and who the pretenders are. The pretenders are the people who say they care about our country but have been sitting on their hands for the last eight months during this Trump regime. The players are the folks who get up every day and truly fight for our democracy. I mean, what we saw out of Newsom today — that’s what this country needs. It’s not just lip service. Farmers, workers, drivers, families, ordinary Irish people have taken to the roads, to the streets, to the gates of this nation’s lifelines because the cost of simply living has become too much to bear. They are not there for attention. They are there because they cannot afford not to be. Fuel prices have surged to unsustainable levels, driven by global crises and policies beyond the control of ordinary people. And yet, it is the ordinary people who are expected to carry the burden. They tell us support has been given. They tell us measures are in place. They tell us to be patient. But patience does not fill a tank. Patience does not keep a business alive. Patience does not put food on the table. Across Ireland, roads have been blocked, cities brought to a halt, and supply lines disrupted. Fuel depots, ports, even the country’s only oil refinery have been targeted in protest. Not out of malice but out of desperation. And now we see the response. The government condemns the protests. Many on social media say, “I won’t fight for them.” But this isn’t about politicians, parties, or provocation. This is about our country. This is about our land, our people, our future. I am a Sikh, from a warrior community with a long history of standing against tyranny. We are taught to serve and protect our land, to defend the innocent, and to stand firm when others step back. If my country is threatened, I will stand. If it comes to it, my children and I will defend our nation, because a country that refuses to defend itself ceases to exist. You can oppose governments. You can criticise leaders. But when the nation itself is under threat, walking away is not protest, it’s surrender. Defending your country does not make you a warmonger. It makes you responsible.
