It’s true that you don’t need a CS degree to become a developer. But I’m starting to think we’ve undersold the importance of having a solid understanding of computer science if you want to be a great developer.

Agree. I think the narrative of “you don’t need a CS degree to be a developer” somehow got transformed into “CS degrees are a waste of time.” That couldn’t be further from the truth.

The more projects I made the more I believe that a solid understanding of algorithms, design patterns and writing clean code is what it takes to be a solid developer. Having a degree helps too but its just a trade off with time and money

I don't have a degree, but I have been doing this for long enough to pick up how it all fits...(errr, about 40 years)! I highly....*highly* recommend this youtube channel. It was only a few month ago, I was trying to fix an old disk drive...

The problem is that people learn in different ways and through different methods. However, the ones that have managed to get a job without a degree are convinced that if they did it, anyone can do it. And that's not how learning works, they're not special for doing it like that and those who need a degree are not less special for needing it. Sadly, the voices of those preaching that you don't need a degree are a lot louder than the rest.

Having a well-rounded and solid understanding of "computer science" has nothing to do with college/uni or a degree. I agree that people take it too far and think React/Tailwind is all they need to be a full on developer. Learning frameworks isn't enough and doesn't involve a lot of problem solving. There's a lot more to it than just UI/UX and a database. I feel like what is lacking is discipline.

Agree! And computer science can be super fun! It's fascinating to learn what's going on under the hood. You get to peek inside the abstractions and see the stuff that's humming along underneath your work (and most of the world's infrastructure) all day every day
