Today is my dear, beloved sister’s birthday. ❤️ Far from what most of you see on social media, PRECIOUS ORUCHE 📌 , as many of you know her, is one of the most loving, selfless, and fun people you can ever have around you. She has gone out of her way countless times to help people, asking for nothing in return. But today is not the day to tell those stories. IU dropped two self-written songs this week and the Korean is doing work that English translations cannot carry. April Kim’s Reel is one of the better public explanations of why. 이 별로부터 looks like “from this planet.” Spoken aloud it is also 이별로부터 — “from a farewell.” Same sound. Two meanings. The whole first track lives inside that pun. You are not just leaving a person. You are leaving the private planet the two of you built and then walking off it. The song is a list of things that only existed between them: the song that was playing at the first kiss, the nickname only they used, the exact way they used to make up after fights, the streets she ran down to meet them, the future they drew together every day. Then she says she will put all of it down here and leave. Not “I miss you.” Not even “I regret it.” She says she has lingered in that place for a long time, and that “waiting” or “lingering attachment” is too small a word for what that was. In Korean it does not sound bitter. It sounds precise. Almost gentle. Like someone packing a room instead of writing a breakup letter. Track two is the opposite temperature. Dear My Crazy Soulmate is written to Yoo In-na. You can be weird in front of me for the rest of your life, that’s why I like you more. My dream is we become two strange grandmas together. Even if the world collapses I will still mess around for your sake. Same writer. Completely different kind of love. One song is leaving a planet. The other is promising to stay on it. This is the part people miss if they only get the English. The plot survives. The architecture does not. IU’s word choices are load-bearing. The homophones are not decoration. The tone sits between diary and poem. People who grew up inside Korean literature still say her lyrics feel like extra homework.
