Denzel Washington’s epic monologue towards the end of Training Day was largely improvised on set. Director Antoine Fuqua was so blown away by his performance, he says he thinks he "forgot to yell cut”. He explains… “That’s Denzel. He was just in his zone. I mean, that was one of those moment...people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go...it's a great tool. It's gonna be a great tool, I think...but the emotion, and the moment that an actor can bring - you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like - I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator - who was shaking- I looked over at the guy - I was like, “please tell me you got that.” Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take - I mean, how do you tell an actor like that, that that wasn't good enough? …He walked over to me, and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, “you good?” He said, “you good?” I said, “Yeah…” Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it. "Putting cases on all you." He kind of added some things in there. Howard Marks has one mantra at the core of his investing thesis: Don't sell your compounders. He walked through the Amazon example. Stock peaked at $90 in 1999 during the tech bubble but then crashed to $6 in 2001. Down 93%. If you were smart enough to buy at $6, would you have sold at $12 after doubling? Most people would. What if you held to $60, up 10x? Most people would sell there. What if you made it to $600, up 100x? Almost everyone sells at that point. Here's the problem: Amazon eventually hit $3,300. If you sold at $600, thinking you'd nailed a 100x return, you left 85% of the total gain on the table. 85%. Marks' point: the natural inclination to sell when things are up is one of the most expensive instincts in investing. Buffett says he made all his money on 12 ideas across 70 years of investing. Charlie Munger said he made all of his money on just 4 ideas. Think about what that means. Great ideas are genuinely scarce. Real compounders, businesses that can keep growing for decades, are rare. When you have one, the job is not to optimize the exit. The job is to hold it. The big mistake isn't buying too early. It isn't buying at the wrong price. The big mistake is getting off too soon.

This man was always excited about Skyline Chili, he’s heard from co-workers how good it was and always wanted to. On his day he happened to be in the vicinity of one and decided to try it out. Immediately when he walked in, he wasn’t greeted at all, in fact they ignored him. The cashier that begrudgingly took his order seemed forced and was bothered by having to serve him. He felt like they made it a point make him feel unwelcome. He ordered the food for dine in, waited a while for it and saw that they packed it in bags to go, further emphasizing how not welcome he was, determined to get the full experience, he sat and ate.
