Makoko just grew 30% to ~12Mt of contained copper, with more drilling still to be added. Discovery costs remain exceptionally low, and its proximity to Kamoa-Kakula could accelerate development. The 2027 resource update and scoping study are the next major catalysts. Exciting!

Congrats on the update. The question that decides Western Forelands is the same one every sediment-hosted basin comes down to: what grade is it holding at depth and continuity, and how far is it from the Lobito Corridor railhead? A world-class intercept 400 km from infrastructure is a very different asset than one sitting on it.

A normal Honda Accord needs about 40 pounds of copper. The same battery electric Accord needs 200 pounds. Onshore wind turbines require about 10 tons of copper, and offshore approx. 20 tons. The world will need to mine 115% more copper than has been mined in all human history just to meet “business as usual.” This would meet our current copper needs and support the developing world without considering the green energy transition. Six new large mines need to come online every year by 2050 to meet global copper demand, but the problem is it takes about 20 years between discovering a new copper mineral deposit and getting a permit to build a mine. None of this takes into consideration the upgrades to the electrical infrastructure needed to "electrify: the world by 2050. In short electrifying the world by 2050 is a politicians pipe dream that will never happen. Source:

They’re only going to get bigger, use vastly more power, and require millions of tonnes of copper at a scale we simply do not have the capacity to mine yet… We looked at one Microsoft baby data center and found that it used 2,177 tonnes of copper. This was just one tiny data center. No one has found as much copper as the Ivanhoe group, but we cannot rest on our laurels. We must keep discovering new deposits, building new mines and producing more copper if we can hope to keep GDP growth at 2% and build a better world for our children and grandchildren… Our gratitude, as always, to BMO Metals and Mining in its 35th edition for providing a tier one platform to discuss what’s really needed.

We are still completely underestimating how short we are, in terms of the global demand supply dynamics of a handful of critical elements that we need, again, in the Trump Doctrine view of the world, that is no longer as multilateral as it was, and we need to have unilateral national security. And if you look through that lens, the asset that is set up to go absolutely parabolic is copper. And the reason is that it is, at least as it stands today, the most useful, cheap, amenable, conductive material that we have. That material manifests in everything from our datacenters, to our chips, to our weapons systems, it's just everywhere. Today, May 25, 2026, the LME price is $13,660 per tonne, with U.S. copper trading (at a premium) at around $6.46 per pound. That’s a rise of over 60% in just two and a half years. The $15,000 per tonne threshold, needed to incentivise meaningful new supply, which I highlighted back in 2023, is now less than 10% away. Yet global copper supply is weaker today and costs are higher. Meanwhile, the demand for copper from the world’s two largest economies is unprecedented. In the US, potential Section 232 tariffs have put imported copper in the crosshairs, while in Asia we’re entering peak Chinese demand season. There are no semiconductors, no data centers, no electrification without copper… which is why the price of the world’s essential electrical conductor now trades in tandem with Nvidia and the AI boom. Add to the mix EVs, robotics, and defense demand, and copper’s future price direction is clear. In another two and a half years, $20,000 per tonne or $9+ per pound is realistic. Even as the world desperately needs more copper mines, we’re seeing supply constraints at existing mines like never before. Meanwhile, demand is gathering steam.
