I've always thought that there's a stark difference between the '79 and '25 version of Anne Shirley and the broche scene is the best example. '79 felt like Anne's last desperate attempt to be at the picnic, whilst the new version, shows Anne's childish outlook on serious matters.

You can really feel what would eventually become Only Yesterday and Kaguya in this episode. The childlike excitement followed by unjust disappointment because of the adults feels so much like every one of Taeko’s flashbacks. Only here, Marilla eventually realizes her mistake.

I haven't even realized that, thank you. Yeah you're right, I didn't even realize the similarities between Anne and Taeko.

The pacing is the biggest factor imo. The range of emotion that this brooch story has is fully explored in Takahata’s version (2 eps!), so this scene has so much more build up and depth. If Anne was this devastated in the new show, that wouldn’t feel earned after just 1/2 an ep.

To quote something I felt a few years back: "On most days, I think Anne might be the very best anime" The new adaptation looks good, do you think they're comparable despite, as you have shown, their differences in interpreting the source, etc?

Obsessed is an understatement 😭😭😭 3 episodes in and one of my favorite animes already 😭 like the emotions it gives me. I'm so attached to the characters, especially ANNE SHIRLEY!!!

Never heard of this anime before. Could I get context on why the picnic is so important to her?

I still feel like 2025's Anne of Green Gables is really good, but man having this scene up and the voice acting of the original really show's how perfect it is.
