But you speak out against the the way insurance companies restrict your ability to care for patients… You would think that it is their money, and not the subscribers who expect them to use the money given to them, to pay for the care they need

Carry on! It is soul-crushing to have a life dream like yours crushed. Do not give up. You have the attention of a lot of people who will likely offer to help you (not financially) to find a new way. Too bad that surgery is likely unable to adopt the headshrinkers' model. They will not touch insurance. They hand clients a diagnostic code and a bill and wish the clients well in submitting for insurance reimbursement.

Always build a reserve fund before taking on big businesses like this. You have to be realistic, they are going to fight to protect their models unless change is forced upon them. Perhaps you need to join with a partner of bigger practice. Being right doesnt mean youll win.

Last night, I got a late call from a breast surgeon here in Austin, TX. Her 22-year-old patient— just days away from a mastectomy—found out the plastic surgeon she had been seeing is out-of-network and her insurance doesn’t cover any out-of-network care. So now what? The breast surgeon called me and asked for a favor, knowing I take cases like this on, even if the payments are low…too low to cover the costs for me and my practice…because I think it’s the right thing to do. My team is doing everything we can to get her seen this week and to get her case approved. But here’s the thing: this isn’t a one-off. This is yet another example of how having insurance doesn’t mean you have access to care. These narrow networks are failing patients. This young woman has cancer now. She needs surgery now. 🫍 It wasn’t really that big of a thing, but it happened during the time when I was going through burnout. Like I said before (about trying to heal by doing things out of comfort zone), since this is something new for me... The thing was, I had a really sore throat, so I couldn’t take singing lessons, but the concert date was getting closer. That one time when Ju asked me when I'll take a practice for song, I had a sore throat at the time. Well, since I’m doing it anyway, I needed to do something, so I decided to learn the language instead. I had to make those 2 hours of lessons worth it to practice my pronounciation. For me, it was pretty hard because I don’t really watch Korean series. The 2 series I remember watching are Full House and The Glory, I guess? So the language wasn’t really familiar to my ears. You know, it’s hard to mimic because I usually learn by mimicking. So when it comes to a language I didn’t really have much exposure to, it takes longer time to practice. The L sound and stuff like that. But when I can finally do it, it's so fun. I love it.

If you feel the wind shifting, I feel it too. This entire situation has been a shock to navigate, but I’m solid—because I know who I am. No amount of noise or pressure changes the fact that I am a woman who works hard, tells the truth, and takes care of people. And when you stand firm in that, even when the wind is blowing hard, you don’t waver. Lately, I’ve been thinking about what keeps me going. My patients, this work, and doing the right thing. And I keep coming back to something my grandfather used to say when we needed rain in Georgia: 🌧️ “Rain down, Little David—big drops, close together.” And right now? That rain is falling exactly where we need it. The support has been overwhelming. My team has grown, I have an incredible legal team behind me, and Bill Ackman has even generously stepped in to help cover legal expenses. I never could have imagined asking for this help—but here it is. So let’s take it and turn it into real change in healthcare. It is 2026 and healthcare is still not making any common sense. Today, multiple cases were canceled again because of a facility issue. The operating rooms weren’t safe to operate in. So my breast cancer patients had their surgeries delayed for hours, and one had to be moved to another facility tomorrow. And what’s so frustrating is that I have an operating room I could take these cases to. It’s ready. It’s safe. But because insurance companies get to decide where we’re allowed to operate, I couldn’t use it. In this case, it was United. They haven’t approved me to be in network at my surgery center, so even though the OR was available, I wasn’t allowed to move the cases there. Other insurance companies have contracted and allow me to take care of patients there. So today, a patient didn’t get surgery when she could have.

Since I’ve started my journey on social media I’ve had to confront a lot of things about myself and my life, the most difficult ones of all being my trauma and my addictions I was using to cope with that trauma. This year I got serious about recovery and so I’ve really had to face the darkest parts of myself and accept them and learn how to live with myself without turning to temporary comforts to avoid the pain. I made this video as an artistic representation of that journey and how I’ve been coming to terms with myself. It’s not easy and it’s still something that I have to choose every day. I’ve felt like giving up so many times over my lifetime but I know that it’s worth it, because I’ve fought so hard to come this far, and because I know that facing my darkness effects all of you for better or for worse, and I want my impact on the world to be a positive one. You all inspire me every day to keep fighting, keep growing, and to never stop believing in myself. American Surgeon shows the actual letter from UnitedHealthcare DENYING a patient in emergency condition from receiving care “This is a woman who was in the emergency room with pulmonary embolisms” “I think we all knew this would happen. I had another patient come in and share with me that UnitedHealthcare denied her inpatient's day. So this is a patient who had shortness of breath and some chest pain, and she just knew that something wasn't right in her body. She had a family history of blood clots and she'd had a deep flap surgery a couple of weeks ago. She went to the hospital and they saw her and they found that she had a life threatening condition known as pulmonary embolisms. So she was admitted to the hospital and taken care of really well by the doctors there. And they ordered all the right things. After a couple of days, she was discharged. She got a letter from UnitedHealthcare explaining that they didn't agree with the level of her care and that they would not cover it. So I'm gonna share some of the language of that letter with you, and I want you to know that my patient that we talked about previously who had her surgery denied had almost exactly the same letter shared. So there's some troubling things in this letter. I think this term is really interesting. United is saying they reviewed the request for inpatient admission. So let's all just pause and consider that. This is a woman who was in the emergency room with pulmonary embolisms, and the doctor wasn't really requesting anything. They were saying this patient needs to be in the hospital. But an insurance company sees this as a request, and that's part of this prior auth environment that we're living in. So I think it's important as patients and as physicians to just acknowledge that this is our reality now. Someone can think that there's a good medical decision for you and can write orders and wanna do the right thing for you, but your insurance company is seeing that as a request and deciding whether or not they wanna do it. One of the criteria that this insurance company used to decide whether or not to accept or deny this request was whether it's medically necessary. And it's so interesting that we're letting insurance companies and the doctors who work for insurance companies determine what's medically necessary and not just the doctor in front of the patient in the emergency room. So this is a really bold statement from UnitedHealthcare for my patient. They say you did not have to be admitted as an inpatient to the hospital for this care. I think we all need to just reflect on that. An insurance company is telling a patient and her doctor that they disagree with the plan of care to keep that patient safe. I know that this is boiling down to whether it's an inpatient admission or an observation admission, and that's really about money. But what I wanna point out to you is they're making medical decisions. This insurance company is actually weighing in and disagreeing with a doctor who made a medical decision to admit this patient for her safety. So this specific sentence, when a doctor or facility treats a patient above the recommended level of care, we cannot cover it. What the heck? That's what we do. We go above and beyond as physicians. It's clear that insurance companies don't, and they're actually saying it here.”

A U-Haul truck ran hit a pipe hanging from the ceiling breaking it open. Instantly water geysered out, smashing windows and windshields, and flooding cars. Initially the parking garage said the driver was at fault for hitting the pipe, but U-Haul said that the clearance signs were inaccurate. I think that the driver ultimately should be liable for all damages, even if the pipe was lower than expected, it didn’t just shoot water out without provocation. I understand the concept of liability and insurance. However I would file a claim with my own insurance company. I used to be an insurance adjuster out of college. I know that when liability is in a gray area, the companies will dispute it amongst themselves and the owners of the damaged cars would have to wait until liability is determined and accepted. Even with a good team, this could take weeks or months all the while nothing happens to my car. So if I file my own claim, use my coverage to fix my car, I would have to pay a deductible and it initially would be a claim on my insurance possibly raising my rates. However once a liability decision is reached, my insurance would go after the other company for the money in a process called subrogation. I’ve used this tactic before and it’s literally the quickest way to get the car fixed or totaled out. I know for some people they don’t want their insurance involved unless they have to but I beg you to think about a worst case scenario and waiting months only to find out a decision still hasn’t been reached while the car owner doesn’t have use of their own car.

A U-Haul truck ran hit a pipe hanging from the ceiling breaking it open. Instantly water geysered out, smashing windows and windshields, and flooding cars. Initially the parking garage said the driver was at fault for hitting the pipe, but U-Haul said that the clearance signs were inaccurate. I think that the driver ultimately should be liable for all damages, even if the pipe was lower than expected, it didn’t just shoot water out without provocation.
