I’ve been taking the driverless robotaxis around SF. They’re safe and fun. Also slower and less efficient than Ubers, because they’re strict rule followers. What’s wild is that we’re back to a world human-taxis are expensive and hard to find. Suddenly it’s easier and cheaper to call a robotaxi!... show more

It's funny to be going down Market Street and the robotaxi you are in is the ONLY vehicle observing the actual speed limit.

well, you and all the robotaxis around you!

@WholeMarsBlog why does it have a steering wheel 🤔🤣

@WholeMarsBlog Because it’s a Chevy Bolt, not a purpose-built car. Also steering wheels and driver gear are required by law in California!

@TheStalwart Wow this is quite interesting I wonder how long it will take for those robots to be in all major cities

@TheStalwart They're coming quickly! San Francisco is a pretty tricky city to navigate so I imagine there are a lot of easy wins out there.

isn’t it only cheaper bc of VC cash?

I’m afraid those days are behind us. Gone with ZIRP. Free money made Uber cheap and easy for many years but now the real costs have set in. Cruise is owned by GM, and I’m sure they’re pouring money in, but it’s not a softbank-backed moonshot.

Wasn’t this supposed to be the whole $TSLA moat/bull case? And now a Chevy bolt is out here doing it?

@SalvoMortgage It’s not the car per se, but the sensor gear on top. Waymo uses Jaguars. Zoox are Lexus Tesla doesn’t use LiDAR. All the actual self driving cars do. Gotta be many years before the compute and sensors improve enough for Tesla to be close to FSD without LiDAR.
