i’ve been thinking about this opening since I did rewatch it, and it’s such a commentary on society. one thing that stood out to me about it this go round was that a black woman was in pain and nobody cared or took her seriously…until it was too late.

yoxic You’re telling me we couldn’t find someone to match Chester’s energy? This girl does amazing killer job, and there’s plenty like her out there. It’s not even about it being a woman or a man. It’s about soul/pain that Chester was able to exude in his voice.

Leigh-Anne says it felt like “no one cared” when she first opened up about the racism she faced as the sole Black member of a girl group, but other Black girl group members reached out to tell her they understood: “I did speak about some of my experiences in 2016 and it just fell on deaf ears, because no one cared. No one was talking about it. Then, when I was speaking about doing the documentary [Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop and Power] a year after, my mum was just like, ‘Leigh-Anne, that’s amazing, but no one cares.’ And she was right! At that time, nobody did. Obviously the [Black Lives Matter] movement was happening [in 2020], and all of a sudden the world had woken up and everyone was talking about race. I just felt like I could really say something now, and it’s gonna get listened to. When I did speak about some of my experiences, Black females from girlbands were reaching out to me like, ‘I literally feel the same,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is wild. It hasn’t been in my head this whole time.’ I feel like now though, we’re however many years in, and I just feel like we’ve gone back to what it was.”

When Whitney passed, the microphone was going around for a, for a week, that everybody getting on TV talking about her. And I'm thinking, "Jesus, the last thing I want to do is get on a radio and talk about her." Uh, after all, it was just a movie really. And, but there was this weird thing that I didn't take into consideration. I think sometimes, maybe you and I can miss what the real momentum is, that we don't really gauge it because we either intellectually dismiss it or we just don't care, but people wanted to hear what I had to say about her, which baffled me. It was a, it was a make-believe relationship we had. And so I avoided it.
