I've been working on structural integrity and stress simulation for the last couple of weeks. Still not sure this is viable for a full game in terms of performance, but maybe. Can now handle one building at 60 fps, but still a lot of optimizations left.

PLEASE PLEASE I NEED THIS. I am not even exaggerating. All my life I wanted a game that was just THIS. The only thing close to that is Detonate (an old ass obscure game) or Teardown with mods

If you can make the next Red Faction-like game, I'll take two please and thanks! :P

If you could have this for the brick, then some kind of metal and wood simulation you'd have a highly successful construction/destruction sim on your hands (And endless youtube videos!). No need for a campaign or anything, just... endless building possibilities

Looks like a really fun project. It would be cool to model the performance of different materials differently. For example wooden beams that are very strong along their axis but snap easier when hit from the side.

Wouldn't it be possible to budget and frame-step the simulation? The minecraft water approach, surely a compromise players could accept if the game is fun.

It’s already doing that :-O

In the game The Finals, the destruction physics is far simplified, but I am still very impressed with what they did: hundreds of fully destructible buildings, real time, in a competitive fps. And you can still play inside the toppled ruins.

Hey Dennis, been keeping a close watch on your work. I love teardown so much, I cant wait for what's next.

Amazing work !! Would love to play a game which just lets me be a super hero and tear through the city

Eh if you just add more materials to make it more realistic your FPS should jump tremendously. Concrete even when shot by a tank produces dust and big chunks, not voxels. Collecting small chunks at rest at the bottom into one big "garbage pile mesh" that can grow could also help

That was honestly the one thing that felt unsatisfying about Teardown. I understand why it couldn't have this, but I always would be missing a pixel when anticipating the collapse.

Amazing! Playing teardown with my son has been such a special experience, great project! 🥰 I'm working on an ai native CAD kernel maybe there's something there to drive more voxel simulations? I've more done volume meshing for simulation and analysis not gaming though.

I really hope you manage it. Voxel games with physics have always had a bit of a styrofoamy quality to them without such systems.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve dreamt of playing a shooter – say, one set in the Second World War – with that level of destructibility… Just imagine firing from a tank at a window from which shots were being fired, and watching half the floor get blown to bits, brick by brick 🥵

Honestly, I find posts like this a bit funny. We have random indies making entire simulations for a game project, things which take other industries months to years to create and charge thousands for, often with decent quality. What I am saying is: this is cool.

This would be incredible for a game, like how Red Faction Guerilla did it in 2009, combining Action Espionage with destruction to infiltrate enemy bases. This would be perfect for it.
