It is that time of year when hornbills nest in the Anamalai Hills of Tamil Nadu, and the valleys reverberate with their deep calls and the powerful whoosh of their wings, sounding like a helicopter in flight. They are truly the icons of this landscape. It was truly magical for me to capture a Great Hornbill mother feeding her chick, an indication that the chick is nearing fledging and is almost ready to leave the nest. During nesting, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity, remaining there through incubation and early chick development, completely dependent on the male for food. As the chick grows the female eventually breaks out of the sealed nest. From this stage onward, both parents take part in feeding, signaling that the chick is in its final phase of growth before its first flight. In this video, a UK Indian restaurant owner and his partner are standing up against people who are pressurizing them to change their menu. They clearly state that they do not sell Halal food and they will not be forced to switch to it just because of pressure. First thing first, they're called peafowls. Only the males are called peacock while the females are called peahens. The name peacock overshadowed the general name for the birds because it is only the male that has that flamboyant tail feathers. The females are beautiful in their own ways but feature subtler colors like gray and brown, not blue. Any peacock you see with the flamboyant fantail is at least 3 years old. When peachicks first hatch and for many months after, the little males and females are impossible to tell apart. They both have the soft, fluffy, and modest brown colour. After three months, the males will start developing colours but they won't have the brilliant tail feathers until they're three. If you need the peacock's feather, you don't need to pluck it forcefully. Just be patient. At the end of every mating season, peacocks undergo molting. This is when they naturally shed their feathers and regrow them longer and fuller ahead of the following mating season. The feathers are used to woo females. Peahens are like those hungry girls that don't have a car but judge a man with Corolla. Even though they don't have the fantails, they will inspect the males properly before picking him as mate. The feathers, the display, the angle and the illusion it creates, these are all judged before the male is found worthy.
