Gone Girl is a mystery thriller about a married couple, Nick and Amy Dunne. They seem like a happy pair from the outside, but things are not as perfect as they appear. On their fifth wedding anniversary, Amy suddenly goes missing, and the police begin to suspect Nick. Evidence found in the house and Amy’s personal diary make it look like Nick may have killed her. As the story unfolds, we find out that Amy is actually alive. She faked her own disappearance to punish Nick for cheating on her and for being a bad husband. She carefully planned everything to make it look like murder, she even left clues, fake blood, and her diary to make the police believe Nick was guilty. However, things do not go as she expected. The man she hides with, an old boyfriend named Desi, becomes controlling and tries to keep her locked up. Amy ends up killing Desi and returns home covered in blood, pretending she was kidnapped and escaped. The media and the police believe her story. Nick knows the truth, but he cannot prove it. When he tries to expose her, Amy announces that she is pregnant (using Nick’s frozen sperm), making it almost impossible for him to leave her without being seen as a cruel husband and father. The movie ends with Nick and Amy back together in their house, living a strange and tense life. Nick feels trapped, knowing she is dangerous, while Amy acts as if they are a happy family. The story closes with both of them smiling for the cameras, pretending to be a perfect couple, but the audience knows they are locked in a toxic, manipulative relationship.
