@DaleVince @rspcaassured An animal can be killed without it experiencing any stress or pain. I tried not eating them for a long time, we are not smart enough as a species to not eat animals and remain in good health, maybe in the future, but the things people are replacing it with currently are bad.

These things happened in slaughterhouses that are RSPCA Assured! The RSPCA (England & Wales) said animals killed here are treated better, decently somehow. The truth is it’s just a badge you can buy and then do biz as usual. Slaughterhouses are the most vile places, terrified animals are beaten into submission routinely, to comply against all of their instincts. A small dog has been left out on a cold balcony in Melbourne for months, pacing and circling. The owner occasionally appears while the little dog tries desperately to get any acknowledgement but appears to be ignored. Angry people have been trying to get something done since this was posted on TikTok, but archaic Victorian laws mean the RSPCA can do nothing. This is pure torture for an energetic little puppy like this. Theres no blankets or toys or anything. What sort of Ahole would do this to an animal!!!? If you live in Victoria, please contact Jacinta Allen and make a noise about laws that allow for this cruelty to continue.

I’m glad Ana Kasparian pushed back on Cenk Uygur here bc while I understand what he’s trying to do bc I used to do the same, she’s right to correct him. We don’t need to launder their reputation. They SUPPORT this genocide. It was hard for me to accept too. I struggled accepting that even the everyday citizens there support this slaughter. I used to separate the population from the government bc I don’t generally think it’s fair to make all citizens responsible for the actions of their government but in this case, their government *IS REPRESENTING* the will of their people.

Once the slaughter is over, and it has to be over, there is an expectation that Palestinians should move on regardless of the lives lost, of the limbs lost, of the loved ones lost. There is an expectation that parents will walk the earth with the shadow of their killed children and do nothing about it. The children who are orphaned will hold onto the memory of their parents but not to the anger over how they were killed. There is an expectation that a nation will be able to move on from the reality of parents carrying their children’s remains in plastic bags, of families buried under the rubble or in the sand they found shelter in after everything else was destroyed. That we will be able to move on as a nation from the images of burning children, of starving infants, of the impact that bombs left behind, on the lives of many Palestinians, on their scarred bodies, in their hearts and minds, of the impact that a single bullet lodged in the child’s head or heart has over an entire family forever. We said long ago, we made a choice, to seek justice not vengeance, but we cannot be prevented from seeking either. We cannot continue to be denied our right to life, to liberty, to dignity. We cannot be denied recourse and reparation. No one has a rightful claim to supremacy, to exceptionalism, to domination, to oppression, no one.

Anyone who is defending the attacks on Israel by Hamas is defending terrorism. Israel has the right to retaliate and defend their territory, as seen below. I get it, that Palestinians believe that Israel belongs to them, but that doesn't warrant an outright attack on the citizens. There are a lot of people who disagree with borders and boundaries, but that doesn't make it OK to invade and attack.

Esther McVey calls for clearer labelling of halal and kosher meats in the UK She argued that consumers concerned about animal welfare particularly where pre‑stunning isn’t used - (88% of halal meat in the UK is pre-stunned) Transcript: “I beg to move, That leave be given to bring in a Bill to introduce compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat and products containing halal and kosher meat; and for connected purposes. This is a Bill about animal welfare, transparency in meat production and consumer choice. It does not seek to ban halal or kosher meat. It seeks to ensure that it is clearly labelled. It is important that consumers have such information so that they can make an informed choice about what they are buying. Currently consumers do not have that information, and many are purchasing and consuming halal and kosher meat without their knowledge and agreement. The unique process of halal and kosher meat requires the animal to have its throat slit. In the case of halal meat, the animal is often stunned before it is killed — although it might not be — and for the shechita killing for kosher meat, there is no pre‑stunning. This lack of stunning causes the animal to experience severe pain. An individual concerned about animal welfare would want to know if the animal has been stunned prior to slaughter. Likewise, there are many religious groups who want to know what they are consuming too and whether the meat has been blessed by another religion. In all those cases clear labelling is essential to make an informed choice. Currently, the legislation that regulates animal slaughter is set out in assimilated EU regulation 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing, as well as in the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015. Under these laws, animals must be stunned before they are killed, but exemptions exist for killing without stunning in accordance with specific religious rites. Added to that, there are currently no requirements for such meat to be labelled. What was once an exemption to the accepted stunning process of animals has become a growing part of the UK’s meat market. The Government’s own figures show that of the 1.035 billion animals processed in English and Welsh slaughterhouses in 2024, an estimated 214.6 million were slaughtered to produce halal meat. The analysis shows that the proportion of meat supplied by non‑stun slaughter is about four times greater than the proportion of Muslims and Jews in the UK. Although Government guidance is clear that meat that results from non‑stun slaughter “must be intended for consumption by Jews or Muslims”, production is clearly going way beyond that, so much so that the UK now exports halal meat. Between 2018 and 2019, there was an almost 700 % increase in the volume of sheep meat exported to the United Arab Emirates, all of which is required to be halal. Clearly, without compulsory labelling of non‑stunned meat, slaughterhouses have gone down the route of producing more of it. In effect, a two‑tier system has been created, whereby some slaughterhouses comply with stunning laws and others do not, citing the religious exemption, though without ever intending to focus their sale on that market. Unfortunately, a driver of the market for non‑stunned meat is the fact that a step of the process is removed, meaning that production of non‑stunned meat is cheaper. Supermarkets and food outlets can purchase that cheaper meat without ever declaring it to the customer, which is not what was intended by the legislation. We have seen many examples of this over the last 15 years; Britain’s biggest retailers — such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Asda — have sold halal or kosher meat without informing the consumer, as have Domino’s, Pizza Hut and KFC. Non‑stunned produce is being used by 17 local councils in schools, the majority of which are not Islamic faith schools, without parents or children having the first idea about it. It is also being served in hospitals and local councils. In December, Labour put forward its much‑vaunted animal welfare strategy, a document lauded for its aim of “preventing animals suffering unnecessarily”, which included the banning of boiling live lobsters, banning the use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs, and steps to ensure the more humane slaughter of farmed fish. I was surprised and alarmed to see no mention of the more humane slaughter of animals and the labelling of halal and kosher meat. There was a clear opportunity to call for the labelling of halal and kosher meat, but it was missed. Nowhere in Labour’s 12,500‑word animal welfare strategy was it mentioned. We often hear in the House that the UK holds the status of a world leader in animal welfare, but such a glaring gap shows that this country can no longer make such a claim. Food and You 2, which is a biannual official statistic survey commissioned by the Food Standards Agency, found that the most common spontaneously expressed food concern in 2024 was “food production method”. In August 2022, almost 99 % of respondents to the Government’s call for evidence on labelling for animal welfare said that method‑of‑slaughter labelling should be introduced. In research from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, 92 % of halal consumers state that clear halal certification is important, so is it not time we updated our regulations and demanded that our meat was clearly and fully labelled, so that we know what we are buying and eating? Surely that is what consumer choice is all about, and I would wager that the overwhelming majority of animal lovers in the UK expect the House of Commons to support this Bill today. This Bill will give all consumers assurance that they know how their meat was produced. I urge all Members of the House to support this measure.”

Fair play to Neil Shastri-Hurst, one of Kim Leadbeater’s strongest allies, who now says this: “It’s absolutely right that the great strength of the House of Lords is that you’ve got expertise in there, and they are the scrutinising chamber. And of course Tanni’s right, this is a private member’s bill, there’s no convention that says it has to be passed… “There will be ill-feeling if it doesn’t get through, by some sectors, and I think we have to recognise that. But if the House of Lords feel the haven’t had sufficient time to scrutinise it then we have to respect what they do.” Iain Dale: “You voted for it?” NSH: “I voted for it, I will be disappointed if it doesn’t become law. On Monday, members of Parliament debated banning halal and kosher animal slaughter. Muslim Labour MP, Yasmin Qureshi argued because "the animal is held, or embraced," before its throat is slit, "any stress is reduced." Independent Muslim MP Adnan Hussain compared those proposing the ban to the Nazis. But absurdity aside, Rupert Lowe MP's contributions provide lessons for how those of us concerned about the incursions of foreign cultures on British customs and traditions should frame their arguments. We shouldn't appeal to abstract universals like "animal welfare" or procedural technicalities. They make us vulnerable to being caught in contradictions by adversaries who aren’t interested in moral consistency, but rather in making room for their religion and ideology to manoeuvre. We should ground our arguments in moral sentiments. What we should be saying in our efforts to prevent these brutal and foreign practices is: I do not care whether or not you stun the animal before you slit its throat in some bizarre and unnecessary ritual. We just don’t do that sort of thing here, I’m afraid. If you want to do that, there are plenty of countries around the world that will accommodate your customs. But we will not.

Universal Ostrich Farms Update: We are still trying to get a headcount on the number of birds here, it is proving to be quite difficult. The family is quite concerned, as are supporters. The CFIA will not provide a headcount and are not being transparent with the family or the public. The RCMP have stated that they have begun in an investigation and that the investigation is ongoing but they are relying on information from CFIA for their investigation. I don't know if there are missing birds here, but I think that the truth matters and we are going to do our best to get to the bottom of it. More to come.

I remember the dire scenarios, and I don’t want to offend anyone, but Cabinet ministers explained here at the start of the war that if Hezbollah got involved, that would be it, we’d be done for, and that’s it — we wouldn’t recover from it, rockets raining down and so on. So why respond now? The answer is because there is Hamas after Iran, just as there was Hamas before Iran, but there was no Hezbollah before Iran, and there is no Hezbollah after it. Ninety-something percent of its budget comes from there. There is no money for terrorists, no money for weapons, no money for rockets. So what Israel is doing now are very significant actions to cut off the wings of that rocket array that was damaged and can no longer come close to hitting anything. It wasn’t what we feared, but still, it’s better to do it. I want to explain the event for a second. The State of Israel’s defense system is such that our situation is both better and worse than it was during Operation Rising Lion. Why? On the one hand, it is better because the Iranians, Israel’s primary enemy, do not see Israel as their primary enemy, but rather the U.S. The U.S. has many bases, and we are together with them, and we have more planes together, so we can attack the ballistic missiles because the Americans are dealing with the rest. On the other hand, the Americans also need to defend their bases much more strongly, so it is very worthwhile to degrade Hezbollah’s capabilities. This is definitely preparation for war.
