She said their stay in South Africa must be regularised because they have contributed immensely to the South African economy. She also urged the South African government to give illegal immigrants a chance to regularise their status in South Africa. Zille further suggested that South Africa should attract foreign skilled workers and foreign entrepreneurs with financial means to start businesses in South Africa. She emphasised that resolving the immigration situation is a complex and time-consuming process, and that a comprehensive, long-term solution is needed not populist demagoguery statements. If you removed MTN from its African operations outside of South Africa, it would become a much smaller company because South Africa contributes only about 18% of MTN’s total earnings. The remaining 82% comes from its operations across the rest of Africa. As the MTN CEO explains below, those relationships have to be nurtured. You cannot allow xenophobia and Afrophobia to destroy them. These companies pay taxes in South Africa, and the profits they generate across the continent ultimately benefit the South African economy. Their expansion creates value for shareholders, supports jobs at home, contributes to tax revenue, and strengthens South Africa’s economic position. It would therefore be foolish for President Ramaphosa not to engage with his African counterparts. Failing to do so would damage not only diplomatic relations, but also trade and investment ties that are vital to South African companies operating across the continent. If African governments were to adopt a united position against South African businesses because of deteriorating relations, the South African economy would suffer significantly. That is why diplomacy is not a luxury; it is an economic necessity. South Africa has provided numerous opportunities to the world, particularly to Africans. If South Africans were truly xenophobic, Africans would not be living there in such large numbers today. The majority of South Africans are welcoming to all foreigners who are legally in the country and do not commit crimes. These foreigners work with South Africans, live with them, and many are married to South Africans. There is nothing to worry about in South Africa if you are there legally and not committing crimes. South African citizens have the right to express concerns about illegal foreign nationals and those who commit crimes. In Zimbabwe, illegal foreigners are often placed in dilapidated jails, and refugees are housed in camps like Tongogara in Manicaland. Generalisations are dangerous, especially when they taint and insult a silent majority that is not xenophobic. Local communities in South Africa have protected foreign nationals from a small, violent minority on many occasions. The South African government is not xenophobic either. If it were, Zimbabwean women, who make up 70% of pregnant women giving birth at Musina Hospital in Limpopo, would not be allowed there. We should be grateful for the South African hospitality we have received for decades. It is important to recognise that while xenophobia and racism may exist in certain pockets of society, these attitudes do not reflect the majority of South Africans or the country as a whole. Respecting the rights of South African citizens to voice concerns about illegal immigration and crime is important, as these are valid issues. However, it is equally important to avoid generalising these concerns to portray the entire nation as xenophobic or unwelcoming.
