In the opening prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring, the scene where Isildur cuts the Ring from Sauron's finger often gives the impression that Isildur was the one who defeated the Dark Lord. In reality, however, it was Gil-galad and Elendil who brought Sauron down. Narsil was not shattered because Sauron stepped on it, as depicted in the film. According to Tolkien's book, the sword broke beneath the weight of Elendil's falling body after he was slain in the battle. Isildur merely delivered the final blow, cutting the One Ring from the finger of a Sauron who had already been overthrown and mortally wounded by Gil-galad and Elendil.
