Jack Nicholson’s McMurphy’s downfall in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest comes from believing he could charm Nurse Ratched. “He knows he’s irresistible to women. He expects her to be seduced by him. This is his tragic flaw. One long unsuccessful seduction.”

In the book, McMurphy is written as a tall, ginger, tattooed bruiser, nothing like Jack Nicholson. Yet in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Nicholson embodies the spirit of the character so completely that the physical description stops mattering.

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Louise Fletcher said she was so disturbed by how cold Nurse Ratched felt on screen that she couldn’t watch the film for years and on set she even stripped down to her underwear to prove she wasn’t actually the “monster” she was playing.

McMurphy is described in the book as a tall, red-haired, tattooed bruiser, which is pretty much the opposite of Jack Nicholson. And yet Jack understood the character so well in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST that the casting somehow feels perfect.

in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the actress who played Nurse Ratched was so disturbed by her performance she couldn’t watch the film for years. On set, she even stripped to her panties to prove she wasn’t a “cold-hearted monster.”

Louise Fletcher won an Oscar for Nurse Ratched in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (1975), then spent decades hearing from audiences who genuinely hated the character. Few performances have blurred the line between actor and role quite that completely.

Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) is terrifying because she disguises abuse as care, convincing her victims she is helping while she crushes them. Louise Fletcher won the Best Actress Oscar for the role.

Jack Nicholson was terrified no one would like the movie, because his character was so horrible to people. He said that playing Melvin was difficult, but he was "the most lovable character I've ever played." Film: As Good as It Gets (1997)

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST turns 51 today. Jack Nicholson lived in the Oregon State Hospital before filming, eating meals & spending time with patients to prepare. Many of the hospital’s patients appeared in the film alongside the actors.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was released OTD in 1975. Cuckoo's Nest is one of the finest pieces of filmmaking ever put on screen, with one of the greatest ensemble casts ever assembled. As awesome as Jack Nicholson is, he's ably supported by a room full of pure talent.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Dr John Spivey was played by Dean Brooks a real physician. Brooks never saw a script, he was just handed R.P. McMurphy's dossier and told to do his job. Jack Nicholson knew where the scene had to go and masterfully guides Brooks through it.
