Jack Tame asked David Seymour what harm is done by the current interpretation of te Tiriti o Waitangi. Seymour's main concern is that subdivision developments might get held up. He also claims students are being forced out of math, English and science to learn te reo.

Tame challenged Seymour over his interpretation of Article 2 which he wants changed to say all New Zealanders have the same level of tino rangatiratanga: "There's an argument that says that your principles are inconsistent with the spirit, the intent, the actual text"

Tame points out that Seymour's interpretation, which Māori legal scholars disagree with, is redundant when the English version exists. "Interpreting the Māori text when the Māori text is based on English text shows that clearly it's a carve-out for Māori, not for everyone."

Tame points out that ultimately it's not fair for a Minister of the Crown, one of the concerned parties, to unilaterally decide what the agreement means. "Why should a party that has a direct conflict of interest... be the one to ultimately interpret what the Treaty means?"

Funny that I think you will find at nearly all NZ secondary schools, English Maths and Science are still compulsory subjects up until year 12. Perhaps to back up his assertion he could provide a list if those schools that do this? Oh no of course he can't cos he made that up.

As a teacher, I can definitely say that Maths and Literacy have always been compulsory and dominate the school program. As a result Science and Māori are always weaved into these lessons and other subjects. His focus should be on too many children in classrooms with 1 teacher

My daughter's school has compulsory Te Reo until Year 11 level, it is part of the options so it is the difference between taking food tech or drama etc not instead of English, Maths or Science

I’ve got 2 kids at primary, they do all of those subjects and more. Te Reo is not taking the place of anything else.

I used to be ashamed to be Maori because I was told: 1. My tribe fought with the British to suppress Maori 2. That we weren't equal, and Maori didn't cede sovereignty 3. That we were "ripped off" and our land was stolen from us Then, in my late 50s, I started researching my Maori history, and based on historically verifiable evidence, I discovered that: 1. We helped the Crown suppress tribes that were breaking the Treaty of Waitangi (The New Zealand Wars) 2. My ancestors, such as Wikiriwhi Matehonoa of Ngati Porou in 1860 who stated: "We are all under the sovereignty of the Queen" and later in 1922, Sir Apirana Ngata (another ancestor) reiterated British sovereignty 3. Then I discovered that more than 50% of New Zealand was sold prior to Te Tiriti but the sales were dodgy and reassessed after Te Tiriti for fairness As I investigated further, I discovered that, starting in 1975 with the Treaty of Waitangi Act, there was a coordinated effort by radical Maori activists in Academia and Government to subvert the meaning of Te Tiriti for their own gain. Professor Elizabeth Rata of University of Auckland calls these radicals the "Retribalists" and notes: "Retribalists in the past 40 years have reinterpreted, developed and interpretation of the Treaty so it can be used as a mechanism to make claims for economic resources and political power." Don't take my word for it. Read the Treaty for yourself and make up your own mind:
