Here’s a back angle of the same play. This is a clean play IMO. I see some mild contact here, but no tackle “from behind” is performed which has been alluded to by some. Jakob is not a dirty player and has never proven to be. Kuithe plants with his left leg at the top of the route and you see a slight buckling inward of the left knee (valgus force which is typical in ACL tears.) This is normal contact with a TE/DB at the top of a route. Jakob disengages with his body after the initial contact. It appears to be a left knee injury. Possibly an ACL tear with some collateral damage based off the mechanism. Kuithe begins to hobble after the plant and eventually falls to the turf. Kuithe, in 2022 suffered an ACL injury and meniscus tear to his right knee. Data shows that once you’ve had an ACL Injury, there is a higher risk of injuring your opposite knee than your reconstructed knee. Furthermore, there is increasing data supporting the elevated risk of ACL injuries correlated to turf as well as style and type of cleats. My heart goes out to Kuithe.

Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill was carted off the field with what appears to be a serious knee injury in the Monday night game vs the Jets. Hill’s leg was put in an air cast as he left with the Miami medical and training staff on the cart. Some Giants fans on social media had mentioned Hill as a trade target they were interested in with the season ending injury to Malik Nabers, but Hill’s season could potentially be in jeopardy with this injury suffered.

Awoniyi has had to be placed in a medical coma due to this injury. This could all have been avoided if the officials are allowed to flag clear offsides early and not play on We all knew a serious injury was a matter of time but PGMOL didn’t listen!

With referees now selected, it will be interesting to see how they manage these sort of things from Springbok. Watch Nortje - first he starts limping, signs of a leg injury. Then when he walks off, he is going off for Head Injury. Argentina physio is trying to point this to the ref. Springboks have mastered this sort of thing the last two years. Watch the Wellington test on the changes made in the first half.

When an ex-orphan brings her new calf home, do our Keepers get to greet the baby? Sometimes – and it's entirely up to the mother. Some, like Nasalot here, walk straight up to a familiar Keeper and let them meet the calf. Keeper Benjamin had been a part of Nasalot’s journey every step of the way since she was rescued as an infant in 2000. Today, Nasalot is all grown up and living wild but she and her family continue to visit their human-elephant family on a regular basis. Other new mothers keep the calf at a careful distance and let the Keepers observe from the side. Whatever they decide, the fact that orphans make this pilgrimage home at all is the gesture of trust. Just seeing them, thriving as a mother and a matriarch, is the reward for years of care and many sleepless nights.

Did you know? Your calf has a muscle that helps pump blood back to your heart. It’s called the soleus, and it’s part of your peripheral heart. When it contracts, it squeezes the deep veins in your calf and pushes blood up against gravity. Valves stop it falling back. But if you sit still all day, this pump sits idle while blood pools in your legs. Mind you, standing calf raises won't fully challenge it. With the knee straight, the gastrocnemius (the muscle on the surface) is free to share the load, because it crosses the knee. So the soleus always gets help and never works at its limit. But if you bend the knee, that flips. A bent knee shortens the gastrocnemius until it goes slack and can barely produce force. Also called ‘active insufficiency’ in exercise science, where a two-joint muscle, shortened at one end, drops out of the movement. So the gastroc switches off, and the soleus, which only crosses the ankle, has to carry the whole thing on its own. That's why the best way to hit it is a bent knee: seated calf raises, or this deep squat version. It’s nearly 80% slow-twitch, so it loves volume and barely fatigues. Sustained work here has even been shown to improve blood sugar control for hours. Train it deep, slow, and often.

In 15 AAA games since his injury, Jacob Melton is slashing .333/.415/.614 with 4 HRs and a 18.5% K rate. He looks ready to join the Rays. It’s just tough because they have 5 other MLB caliber OFs who deserve a spot on the team. Vilade and DeLuca obviously aren’t going anywhere as they are the only 2 RHH OFs, Simpson isn’t either. That leaves Mesa Jr. and Mullins, who have both shown their value. Getting rid of Mullins means a trade or DFA, which really impacts the OF depth. Given the fact that some of the OFs on the team have had extensive injury concerns in the past, that would be tough to do. Mesa Jr. seems the likeliest option to go, but he’s been really impressive since coming up. Overall this is a good problem to have, but it’s a difficult spot to be in.

Quick Case. Patient with a history of recent trauma. He was referred for an ankle ultrasound (normal). Clearly, the problem is at the mid-foot. Lisfranc injury, maneuvers are performed with stress, axial compression on the metatarsal with a fixed midfoot, and we can clearly see the marked instability of the medial column, with opening and displacement. It is much more evident when compared to the normal side. #mskrad

A milestone moment, in miniature form, for Makireti: Our ex-orphan has become a mum! On 2nd May, Makireti, and fellow wild-living orphans Kilabasi, and her calf Kofi, Tusuja, and Neshashi arrived at the Ithumba Stockades. This was clearly no ordinary visit: The group had returned to make an announcement, visible between mum's legs was her hours old calf. We have named him Makimaki, after a distant dwarf planet; a fitting name for the newest little planet in our expanding elephant galaxy. Makimaki’s arrival is not just a joyful moment — but a living symbol of the success of our Orphans’ Project and the generational impact of saving one life. Enjoy the full story at: #Family

Meet Sulwe. You met her mum, Sonje, earlier this week. Sulwe was born wild on Christmas morning 2024, in the Kibwezi Forest just outside our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Sonje was once one of our most seriously wounded rescues – she arrived in 2012, nine months old, with a fractured leg – a victim of the poaching crisis. Thirteen years later, Sonje is wild, and Sulwe is the proof. She turned one in December. Earlier this year she tried to pull the tail of another wild-born calf, found out he was stronger than she expected, and ran back to her mother. Human or elephant, the kids all have to learn how to get along, it seems. Every calf like Sulwe is a bright light of hope for elephants.
