Tolkien viewed the Norman conquest of England as an absolute catastrophe for English culture that required repair. An example I always like to point to is Rohan. He modeled the Rohirrim after the Anglo Saxons, because if Harold had some semblance of cavalry at the Battle of Hastings, then England wouldn't have lost it's idyllically Christian Anglo-Saxon culture.
