James Gray has a great rant about this very thing.

The Hollywood studio that pivots its main focus from 4-5 $200 million movies sold entirely on IP, to 20 $50 million ones sold on stars/concepts, is the one most likely to still be here in 20 years.

Theyve trained audiences to only go to event films, but you need them going in the between times for theaters and studios to survive.

ALSO the spreadsheet model doesn't work when you are talking about something like art. Comedy A- that didn't earn back its budget doesn't not mean Comedy B won't earn back its budget. Every film has 10,000 different factors that will determine whether or not it will be a hit.

I enjoy streaming but it’s frustrating not having a choice to see a more “niche” movie that you like in a theater. For me this especially true for foreign language movies, it’s easier to read the subtitles and the subtitles take up less space on larger screen.

I’ve heard him interviewed by @SeanFennessey on @TheBigPic several times, really wonderful interviews, if you enjoyed this clip you would really like them.

Great thing is...nthe winds of change are here. Oppenheimer making $1 billion and all the other films getting good box office traction means people are hungry for change.

Whats the original source for this video? Would love to watch the full thing

100% yes yes yes!

James Gray has never made a movie that even tried to make money so of course he's going to complain that his boring films flopped. His last two movies were good but maybe try making one that's not a dimly lit talking fest. I'm sure if he directed Uncharted 2 it'd be great.

He makes a great point and very insightful. He pretty much describes me. I've been boxed out of the theater
