The Bible explicitly says: 'But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.' (1 Timothy 5:8) That's family/household first-a direct command. Loving your own (family -> community -> nation) before extending to distant strangers isn't 'antithetical to the Gospel'; it's basic Christian responsibility. Jesus loves the world radically (John 3:16), but He also prioritizes His disciples/family (Mark 3:35 spiritual family, but natural ties matter). Vance echoes 'ordo amoris'-a historic Christian idea: ordered love starts close and expands prudently. Ignoring family/nation first to virtue-signal 'big love' for outsiders risks denying the faith Paul warns about. Borders and priorities protect the vulnerable at home too (Rom 13:1-7). Gospel transforms, but doesn't erase natural duties.

@jamestalarico @JDVance Read "Religion in the Old South" by DG Mathews. He explains how Evangelical Christianity in the South started out abolitionist, but then evolved to rationalize the brutality of slavery. Therein lies the origin of the contradictions you wonder about.

My prior for Vance is that he uses the Lord as a crutch, an add-on, because it serves his purpose, in exactly the way he leeched on to Trump. No data I have seen so far shifts me from this prior. Quite the contrary.
