Mark Ruffalo says he lied about knowing how to ride a horse to land a role, only for the horse to immediately expose him on set. At the audition, Ruffalo was asked, “Can you ride a horse?” and confidently replied, “Of course I can ride a horse!” In reality, he says his experience mostly involved sitting on horses that followed other horses. “I was basically just a sack on the back of a horse.” Still, when they kept asking if he could ride, he insisted: “I can ride a horse! How many times do I have to say it to you?” After getting the part, Ruffalo planned to secretly learn the basics from the horse wrangler. “I'll say, ‘Listen, man. I don't know how to ride a horse. Do you think you could teach me really quick?’” But the wrangler warned him: “You can't learn to ride a horse in half an hour.” Ruffalo's response: “Try me.” The first scene required him to jump onto a horse, kick it, and ride away. Instead, the horse bolted in the wrong direction and disappeared into the woods. “The horse was trying to kill me.” “It was running up against every tree... to try to scrape me off.” Panicking, Ruffalo somehow mixed up “stop” and “go.”. “I was like, ‘Stop! Stop! Stop!’” while continuing to kick the horse. Eventually the wranglers caught up, jumped off their horses, grabbed his horse, and practically wrestled it to the ground. Ruffalo then had to make what he called the “shameful 300-yard walk” back to director Ang Lee. Lee was sitting there silently watching the disaster unfold. Ruffalo walked up and asked: “Should we do it again?” 😆
