When Melissa and Mark Hortman were killed in an act of political violence, the gunman also took the life of their beloved dog Gilbert. Their son Colin shared with me that after an earlier threat was made on his mother’s life she decided to get a dog. Gilbert was a golden retriever who Melissa planned to keep until he finished his service dog training. It turned out that Gilbert was too friendly to be a traditional service dog, but would go on to be of great service to the Hortman family. Melissa and Mark loved Gilbert and Gilbert loved them back. And we miss them all every day.

However, illegal dumping remains a major challenge, with some business communities, hawkers, and matatu operators using street families to dispose of waste improperly. I urge all businesses, hawkers, and matatu operators to take full responsibility for the garbage they generate by disposing of it at designated holding points. If they do not wish for the county to manage its transfer to the Dandora dumpsite, they can register with private service providers for doorstep collection. Maintaining a clean city is a shared responsibility. If we all embrace change and manage waste responsibly from source to final disposal we can achieve a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.
