Japan has doubled its defense budget, scrapped decades-old limits on arms exports, and can now sell lethal weapons to 17 countries, all under PM Sanae Takaichi. She has explicitly warned of the Chinese threat to Taiwan, which sits just 100 km from Japanese territory. Article 9 of Japan's post-war constitution renounced war entirely, it was written by American occupiers specifically to prevent Japan from ever becoming a military power again. For 80 years, the Japanese built their national identity around it. But what changed is the neighborhood: China rehearsing Taiwan invasions, North Korea regularly test-firing nuclear-capable missiles, Russia at war in Europe with Chinese backing, and an American security umbrella that looks less reliable by the year. Japan isn’t abandoning pacifism because it wants to, it is abandoning it because the world it was designed for is gone.
