It’s not viable. The amount of force produced by a single footfall equates to a couple watts of power… for a few hundred milliseconds. Barely enough to light a couple LEDs for a moment, not enough to power anything useful, let alone store or power buildings.

Sure - just like taxation - steal a little from a lot of people and trumpet the net gain. Everyone who walks on this sidewalk has to work a little harder to get from point a to point b. They may go home and eat extra junk food and die earlier. EVERY action has consequences.

As long as the principle of energy conservation remains valid, the energy collected through the tiles comes from people walking on them, net of the chain's returns. A useless invention...

@realDonaldTrump @elonmusk work on America instead of inciting racism amongst the people. This is what we need, help cut cost of power and put $ back in the people's pockets. We can learn alot from other countries especially the gun laws.

Footfall energy generation is an example of spontaneous market solutions, no central planner had to come up with the idea, and it doesn't require a heavy regulatory framework to implement. Incredibly free.

So the video shows 4W and I call BS. This is just a green techi's wet dream and will never be economic, practical, or reliable. The 4W shown would be a very brief peak (but is just a number), say 2 joules tops per step. You would get more power from a wind farm in the doldrums.

The point is that walking on such a floor will be twice as difficult, like walking through a swamp - it absorbs the energy of movement. In a huge metropolis with gigantic distances this is strange. What's stopping us from speeding up the movement of moving belts powered by solar batteries?
