🇨🇳 China Calls U.S. Hormuz Blockade “Dangerous and Irresponsible,” Urges Immediate Ceasefire Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun condemned the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in back-to-back statements Monday and Tuesday, warning it would deepen an already fragile crisis. Guo told reporters Tuesday that the blockade “will only aggravate confrontation, exacerbate tensions, undermine the already fragile ceasefire, and further jeopardize the safety of navigation through the strait,” calling it “a dangerous and irresponsible move.” “The Strait of Hormuz is an important international trade route for goods and energy,” Guo said at a Monday briefing. “Keeping the area safe and stable and ensuring unimpeded passage serves the common interest of the international community. The root cause of the disruption at the Strait of Hormuz is the military conflict. To solve the issue, the conflict must stop as soon as possible.” Beijing said it “believes that only a comprehensive ceasefire can fundamentally create conditions for easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz,” and urged all parties to “take concrete actions to promote regional de-escalation and restore normal navigation.” Guo also rejected reports that China was supplying weapons to Iran as “groundless smears and malicious associations.” China, the largest buyer of Iranian crude, has a direct stake in the waterway remaining open. President Xi Jinping warned against a return to the “law of the jungle” in global trade routes on Tuesday, during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing. Xi said “the world today is rife with chaos and faces a contest between justice and power,” calling on the two nations to “oppose the world’s regression to the law of the jungle.”
