I heard that the original script for this scene was 'too long'. Robert Shaw took it away, and re-wrote it. He delivered what needed to be heard. Richard Dreyfuss was in complete awe. His reaction is genuine, making the scene more poignant. Even Bruce the Shark got Goosebumps

Today marks the 50th anniversary of “Jaws,” one of the most iconic films of all time. While on the boat, Quint shares a story with Chief Brody and Hooper about his time on the USS Indianapolis which was sunk by a Japanese submarine. 900 men were stranded at sea. Over the next four and a half days, just under 600 men would die from dehydration, hypothermia, shark attacks and saltwater poisoning. Edgar “Ed” Harrell was assigned to the USS Indianapolis and lived to tell the story of those harrowing days at sea.
