Even if, for the sake of argument, we granted that icon veneration were a later accretion (which I don’t), that still would not establish non-denominational Evangelicalism as true. At most, it would be an argument against Orthodoxy on that specific point. You would still have to demonstrate why your position is correct rather than another alternative. For example, Roman Catholicism could still be true, since it explicitly allows for doctrinal development. So even if your critique succeeded, it would not get you to your conclusion. The argument simply doesn’t follow.
