JAY-Z - Stream Of Consciousness The Lore: The music industry(the 3 major labels) decided to change the music selling model from physical cds to streaming. They didn’t ask the artists for permission. They didn’t negotiate how much a stream would cost, they just did it & the trillion dollar assets they used to start it was the artists’ music. JAY-Z, someone who’s extremely passionate about ownership of one’s music, said no. He wasn’t going to allow them to make billions off his music. Prince, Beyoncé, & a few others also objected. 💯 Instead of crying, JAY-Z paid $56 million for Tidal & gave FREE equity to a dozen-plus artists. However, unlike Spotify & Apple Music… Tidal received major backlash. People said if they supported Tidal it would just be the rich getting richer. Completely ignoring the fact that Spotify was worth billions & APPLE is worth even more. Fine. & Again, instead of more crying, he proceeded to build Tidal into a now billion dollar company & then sold shares of it to his friend Jack Dorsey for $300 million while still negotiating to ensure the other artists maintained their shares. Those artists made about $9 million each solely because Jay gifted them equity in a company HE paid for. This freestyle was months after purchasing Tidal to address his people directly & to address the backlash from the media. “I don’t take no checks I take my respect Pharrell even told me go with the safest bet, Jimmy Iovine offered a safety net, Google dangled around a crazy check, I feel like YouTube is the biggest culprit, Them niggas pay you a tenth of what you supposed to get”
