When you're groomed into a cult of craven, venal self-righteous fealty to predatorial Israel - cult Zionism - as most of DC is and the Trump regime in particular, the moral/legal universalism that Al-Sayed supports (America's classic liberal foundation) is apt to look like a betrayal, a "terrible evil."
