Jeff Kibble just confronted Chrystia Freeland with a straightforward question: “Will the Liberals attach a common-sense condition to BC Ferries’ $30 million subsidy — that they buy Canadian-built ships?” Why are we handing billions of dollars to China to build ferries that could be built right here at home?!...

Chrystia Freeland’s response: She shares Jeff Kibble’s concerns about government procurement at all levels. She says now is the time to support Canadian workers and industry, and to work closely with allies and trade partners. But then she drops the kicker: “That project, was NOT a federal government project, Mr. Speaker.” Even Freeland is desperately trying to distance herself and the Liberals from Eby and this deal! 2/2🧵

BC NDP have now given the CCP a direct umbilical cord to put clandestine monitoring devices in all levels of those vessels! @JeffKibbleCML @cafreeland that could also extend into domestic aerospace of our interior Waters. Does anybody remember that unfortunate incident with the balloon? Low-key data surveillance. If you think these vessels would be built without Chinese technology components alongside clandestine surveillance technology, you are absolutely reckless and naïve, and you are putting National in provincial security at risk. GPS, sonar, radar, points of sale terminals, telemetry and meta data facial recognition, license plates of vehicles on decks will be monitored. They could put clandestine recording devices and record conversations employees in passengers on these vessels. If people think this is tin hat, conspiracy theory, guess again it happens the Chinese do it all the time. They can have access to employee and passenger data on board. And absolutely minuscule protections of any data. You’ve now potentially exposed BC to illegal privacy breaches and security surveillance of employees and passengers to data surveillance & facial recognition by the CCP.

Good work Harman staying on top of this from all levels! The pressure needs to keep up so this deal is scrapped and the project is Canadian built.

My preference of course would see these ships built in Canada. That said, I understand why BC Ferry’s ordered from China: 1) no Canadian firm placed a bid 2) Canadian shipyard capacity is already strained (because of large military commitments) 3) even if a Canadian company bid on these ships, the timeline to completion would be many years out. Canada simply cannot compete with the facilities and labour force found in other countries. If memory serves, a number of ferries were built in Poland not too long ago.

Come on Harman, stop hiding and answer the question. What company are you forcing to build the ferries?

No shipyard in Canada bid on BC Ferries' new vessels because they're all busy with other projects. How long should ferry dependent communities in BC wait for reliable transport?

Where was the RFP posted? Because it’s not on BC Bid.

Yet if the idiot looked he would see the capable Canadian yards are booked building junk for the CCG & RCN. Hence no bids from Canadian yards

Here’s a question - are all these folks calling for Canadian-made ships prepared to pony up the additional $$ over the cost for foreign built ships? As a regular user of B.C. Ferries, I don’t want to see fares raised because the ships cost more to build in Canada.
