Jeffries: And so, because of this provision, it will trigger the next step, where the Department of Justice is going to have to explain not just to Congress but to the American people why the document production has been incomplete, justify as best they can why they have withheld...

Lee: It is a gross abuse of our ability to conduct oversight. They are essentially spying on us as we are looking through and trying to do any sort of investigation and bring about transparency regarding these Epstein files. I think that is really problematic for that reason — that they are spying on members of Congress who are doing their job. Also, why should we have to do this at the end of the day? These files shouldn’t have been redacted in that way in the first place. They’ve redacted the names of people who perpetrated heinous crimes. These are some of the most powerful people — potentially — but we don’t know because they still won’t release the names. Yet they unredacted the names and images of survivors. None of this would have been a problem if they had done their job in the first place. I do want to remind people that the Epstein Transparency Act is one of the things that compels them to release the files. Also, our subpoena from back in August compels them to release the full, complete, unredacted files — except for the names or identifying information of survivors, which should be coming to our committee. There is no reason why they haven’t yet released the final 3 million or so documents. They’re saying the Epstein Transparency Act is the reason why, but our subpoena does not contain that loophole. So we still expect the rest of the files. We expect that the executive branch will not trample on the legislative branch’s ability to do our job. And I just think it’s funny that Pam Bondi had so much energy today in that hearing, all while she is protecting pedophiles.

YOUR REACTION: Following vote to hold him in contempt for withholding subpoenaed Biden audio tapes, Attorney General Garland rages, says, "There have been a series of unprecedented and, frankly, unfounded attacks on the Justice Department." WATCH "We have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the committees get responses to their legitimate requests. But this is not one to the contrary. This is one that would harm our ability in the future to successfully pursue sensitive investigations. "Now, there have been a series of unprecedented and, frankly, unfounded attacks on the Justice Department. This request, this effort to use contempt as a method of obtaining our sensitive law enforcement files is just the most recent. The effort to threaten to defund our investigations and the way in which there are contributions to an atmosphere that puts our agents and our prosecutors at risk. These are wrong. "Look, the only thing I can do is continue to do the right thing. I will protect this building and its people. "Why don't we respond? You can answer this just now, but I was wondering, like, you know, what these, this combined with the efforts to defund Jack Smith and the other attacks on Biden, administration officials say about, you know, the broader effort to discredit you and to discredit the Justice Department, and also, how would you manage that? How are you resisting that, and what can you do about that? "As attorney general, we have to go about our work following the federal principles of prosecution. As I said, we follow the facts and the law. We screen out outside inappropriate influences. That's what we're doing here. We're protecting our ability to continue to do high profile and sensitive investigations, and we will continue to do that. "Seems vanishing. The acts now seem vanishingly small that the two Jack Smith federal cases are going to begin trial, let alone finish trial this year. What does that say about the pace of the justice system and confidence in this Justice Department? "Look, the special counsel brought both cases last year. He appropriately requested speedy trials. The matter is now in the hands of the judiciary, and I'm not going to be able to comment any further."

Garcia: First, let’s be very honest about what’s happening. This is a White House cover-up. They are now involved in an illegal cover-up of the Epstein files. They’re defying Congress. They’re defying their own base. They’re lying to the American people. And this “release” was no release. I want to clarify something people need to know. First, a large chunk of what they actually released was already public information. It had already been released. Then the other big chunk—the new stuff that was released—was highly redacted. We anticipated, by the way, that this was the likely posture the DOJ was going to take. We were under no illusion that they were somehow going to release everything. So we’ve been working—I’ve been working directly—with Jamie Raskin, who, by the way, is one of the best constitutional lawyers in America. We have a legal plan that we’re moving forward right now. Ro Khanna and Tom Massie are also moving forward with plans within Congress, looking at possible ways of holding Pam Bondi in contempt or even beyond that. What’s really critical about that piece—because we don’t have the majority in Congress, and we have to be honest about that—is that Tom Massie is considering leading that effort. If we can get a Republican leading an effort to hold Pam Bondi accountable in a way that hasn’t been done in Congress, quite frankly, in decades, that’s going to be a very powerful step. And then we have a number of incredibly smart lawyers and advocates across the country, including those working with survivors, looking at what our legal options are in the courts as well. So all hands are on deck right now. All options are on the table.
