Intel had its own answer to Nvidia, and it was killed a week after he walked out the door. This is Pat Gelsinger, 34 years at Intel, on the project nobody remembers. At the height of Intel's strength on CPUs, they laughed at what Jensen was building. "When we were at the height of our strength on CPUs at Intel, we sort of scoffed at his machines. Right? Like, oh, it's a graphic machine. There's some gamers who want to use that kind of stuff. It was always the big CPU and those little GPUs." Nvidia did the unglamorous thing instead. They put a real software stack under it and made it slightly better every release, for years, while nobody scored them. "But when they started to build a real software stack with it... this CUDA thing and SIMT as a technology... And it just sort of kept getting a little bit better and a little bit better. And it was a little bit Jobs-like in that way. 'We're just making it better every release and it's becoming more robust.'" Nvidia did not see the payoff coming either. Somebody else found it for them. "And all of a sudden, the crazy Japanese HPC guys said, hey, we could take those graphics cards and maybe start using them in HPC. I love Elon Musk's old interviews. I really enjoy hearing what he said back then, knowing what the future holds. This "CBS Sunday Morning" interview was recorded in 1998, when then 27-year-old Elon talked about starting his first company: “That was the summer of '95. I had no money whatsoever. I was working, doing research in Silicon Valley on a completely different subject and trying to start this company at the same time. And when it came time to decide do I want to do graduate studies or do I want to start this company and I decided to start the company. I had no money. If you had to concretize it, one thing that is very strange is if you just follow the money, at this point 80 to 85% of the money in AI is being made by one company, it is NVIDIA. It is all on this very weird hardware layer, which Silicon Valley does not even know very much about anymore. We do not really do hardware, we do not do silicon chips in Silicon Valley anymore. I get pitched on these companies once every three or four years, and it is always, I have no clue how to do this, it sounds like a pretty good idea, but man, I have no clue, and we never invest. There is this theory that the hardware piece makes the money initially, then gets more commodified over time, and it will shift to software. And the, I do not know, multi trillion dollar question is whether that is going to be true again this time, or whether NVIDIA will have this incredible monopoly. I suspect NVIDIA will. I think it will maintain its position for a while. I think the game theory on it is something like this. All the big tech companies are going to start trying to design their own AI chips so they do not have to pay the 10x markup to NVIDIA. How hard is it for them to do it? How long will it take? If they all do it, then the chips become a commodity and nobody makes money in chips. So do you go into hardware? You should do it if nobody else is doing it.
