Jerome Powell needs to lower interest rates by one full percentage point at the Fed meeting next month. Since March, he has refused to lower rates because of “tariff inflation” that has not shown up. Because he did not cut at those meetings, he is behind and needs to catch up. Doing so would deliver relief for working Americans and bring mortgage, credit card, and business loan rates down from near 20-year highs. President Trump deserves a Fed chair focused on facts and fundamentals—not politics.

The last time interest rates were this high was in December 2022, when inflation was 6.5%. Inflation today is 1.8% annualized since he took office. How on earth does it make sense to have the same level of interest rate restrictiveness when inflation is 1.8% as we did when inflation was 6.5%? These are the questions Americans demand answers to. Instead of lowering interest rates because inflation is now at a four-year-low, Powell would rather keep rates near 20 year highs because tariffs *might* be inflationary at *some point* in the future. Being wishy washy is no way to run the United States Federal Reserve. Real people are hurting because of the Fed's high rates.

I think the Fed will cut by 0.25% later this month, but that's too little, too late. They should have cut in March, May, June, and July. At least 0.25% at each of those four meetings. I wouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than a full percentage point cut when they meet on Sep 16-17. The truth is that since President Trump took office in January, CPI inflation has been 1.9% annualized. Under any other president, the Fed would be cutting aggressively given how far inflation has fallen. But because it’s a guy named "Trump," and because they’ve spread panic over tariffs, they refuse to do the right thing—and homeowners and business owners are paying the price with these high rates.
