First of all, the hadith she’s referring to is Sahih Muslim 1695. The context is important. The woman herself came to Muhammad ﷺ and confessed that she had committed adultery. She wasn’t simply accused by someone else. Muhammad ﷺ initially sent her away because she was pregnant. She came back after giving birth, and he sent her away again until she had weaned her child. After that, she returned again and insisted that the punishment be carried out. So it is not accurate to describe the story simply as, “Jesus forgave the adulterous woman, while Muhammad punished an adulterous woman.” The circumstances are different. There is also a distinction between repentance and legal punishment in the Islamic account. Repentance means turning back to God and seeking forgiveness for the sin. The legal punishment described in the hadith is a separate matter. The narration actually speaks positively about the woman’s repentance even though the punishment was eventually carried out. So, from the Islamic perspective, the punishment does not mean Muhammad ﷺ believed she could not be forgiven by God. The narration specifically presents her as someone who sincerely repented. You can argue that Jesus’ response demonstrates a different approach to mercy, and that’s a legitimate theological discussion. I am confused. Muhammad is said only to be a prophet, not a priest. Prophets don't forgive sins, since that was a function appointed by God to priests. Why would she need to seek Muhammad's forgiveness? Also, adultery requires two people, and the man was not brought before Jesus.
