They were chosen by God. They did not go to universities seeking degrees or scholarly recognition. They were unlearned men, speaking the common language of ordinary people. Some could hardly read or write their own names. They were fishermen, a tax collector—not men of scholarly renown. Even after being with Jesus Christ for three years, He told them to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Ghost came and indwelt them. Only then could they go forth to teach and do the works of God. It was not them; it was the Holy Ghost in them. That is the model for every preacher and every son of God—not hierarchies of men, scholarships, degrees, titles, and all these qualifications. Jesus never established that as the requirement. What foolishness and nonsense! God chooses the man, and the Holy Ghost works through him.

The beauty of Matthew 16: right after declaring Peter the Rock, Christ rebukes him as “Satan” for trying to bypass the Cross. Catholicism has never taught that Peter was sinless or infallible in his personal human impulses. God builds His Church on flawed men so the power belongs entirely to the Holy Spirit. Peter’s human weakness didn’t revoke the key, it proved why he needed grace to shepherd the flock, baptize, and lay down his life.
