Jesus said, “It is finished” “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” “Finished” means completed, accomplished, paid in full. The Greek word tetelestai was used in the ancient world in several powerful contexts: • In commerce: A debt “paid in full” (stamped on documents). • In military or legal settings: A task fully carried out to the end. • In religious sacrifice: The completion of an offering. Jesus was announcing that the work of atonement for sin was fully done. No more offerings, no more unfinished business. Does that mean that Jesus saves? Yes, that is exactly what it means. When Jesus said, “It is finished” He was declaring that He has accomplished the work of salvation. Through His perfect life, substitutionary death on the cross, and resurrection, Jesus has fully saved all who trust in Him. • The problem: Humanity is separated from God because of sin. The penalty for sin is death and judgment. • The solution: Jesus, fully God and fully man, took that penalty upon Himself. He lived the perfect life we could never live and died the death we deserved. • “It is finished” announces: The price has been paid in full. The barrier between God and people has been removed. Salvation is accomplished. This is why the name Jesus means “The Lord saves” (Matthew 1:21). His death and resurrection are the means by which He saves. • Salvation is not something you earn by good works, religious rituals, or trying harder. • Salvation is a gift received by faith in what Jesus has already finished. • Because the work is complete, anyone who repents and believes in Jesus receives forgiveness, a restored relationship with God, and eternal life right now (not just after death). “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Yes - “It is finished” means Jesus saves. He has done everything necessary. The only response He asks for is trust in Him.
