The city of Jerusalem had grown quiet after the Passover meal. The moon hung over the olive trees as Jesus Christ walked slowly into the garden with his disciples. But this night was different. The Bible says his soul was exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death. Matthew 26:38. Jesus knew what was about to happen — the betrayal, the suffering, the cross. So he walked deeper into the garden and fell to the ground to pray. And in the silence of that night, Jesus prayed one of the most powerful prayers ever spoken: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me — yet not my will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42. The weight of the world was upon him. Luke tells us something astonishing: Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Luke 22:44.
