He was raised by a single mom who worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, doing everything she could to give him the best shot at success. She sacrificed a lot to help him get into a great college. He said he was proud of his mom and happy with where his life had led him. But after reading my book, he realized something—given the choice, he would have traded his Stanford acceptance letter just to have known who his father was. Education is important. Social mobility is important. These are things we should absolutely focus on. But we could also focus on repairing the family. Because while it’s great that a young guy can get into Stanford, it would be even better if he could do it with his dad in his life too.
