‘27 RHP Bo Bryan (BGA Athletics) Son of Country Music star Luke Bryan. The stage definitely wasn’t too big for Bo today as he shut down GCA in a big district matchup throwing 5 innings giving up just 2 hits with 2 BB’s and 1 K. Bo sat mid-70’s with his fastball and also threw a curveball that was 65-66 MPH that kept GCA hitters off balance the whole outing. You’re at the playground with your 3-year-old and another kid threatens to “break their head open” 😳 This parent went full “demon child” in the caption while filming. The kid in the video is just walking around the rocks, but that kind of language from a child is wild. Where are they even hearing stuff like that? I don’t think I would have gotten away with saying such a thing when I was that age.

The Blue Jays are selecting Arizona State LHP Cole Carlon at 39. Ranked #33 on Baseball America's top 500 big board, Carlon features an upper 90s fastball that sits 96 and has touched 101. His power slider is a 70 grade offering that generated a 56% miss rate. Monster two pitch mix while toying around with a upper 70s curve and high 80s changeup which need refinement. He will need to find a third pitch and refine his command to remain a starter but the stuff is off the charts.

The A's continue to stack up on young left-handed pitching, selecting Mason Edwards (2nd round, pick 47). Edwards wields a 91-94 mph four-seam averaging ~21 iVB, although the pitch plays below its raw carry from a very high 6.6 ft. release height. Likely needs to be 93-95 for big league success, swing-and-miss somewhat lacked. The secondaries and their potential make Edwards the prospect he is. From the over-the-top release, his 80 mph curveball generates strong two-plane movement (-10/11) at a very steep approach. Strong command of the offering, ability to use at high frequency. While he didn't use it too often, Edwards' changeup has massive promise, also on a very steep plane from his heavily vertical release. Showed velocity and movement separation from his four-seam, projects as a great weapon vs. RHH. Boasted an elite whiff rate >50%. Needs more consistent feel and usage. The southpaw's slider is also a work in progress and was non-existent in many outings this year, but it will be a critical bridge pitch in his arsenal. 80-82 mph with inconsistent shape. With such a large vertical distinction between his four-seam and curveball, Edwards needs a hard, tight slider to sit between the pair and make swing decisions tougher. Hopefully, the A's can find a mid-80s pitch in gyro territory. The largest area for growth with Edwards is his command, as he posted a walk rate >10% in each of his three collegiate seasons (11.9% junior year). In my opinion, it seemed like he was always pitching for punchouts and around the edges of the plate. I think more strikes should come with more in-zone emphasis in early counts, and he has the stuff to never worry about being over the plate. With some velocity progression and refinement of his changeup and slider, I find it very likely Mason Edwards becomes at least of middle of the rotation starting pitcher. A's have a stellar crop of young southpaws.

Athletes should be met with movement problems to solve not given solutions. Take John Carver ripping 250+ foot single leg throws with a 16 oz plyo for example. This was in Fall of 2023 whenever John made a jump from touching low 90s to sitting low 90s touching 96.6. Spinny upper half, long arm action, bailing out towards 1st base after front foot strike were amongst things we talked about needing to be addressed within the throw. Single leg throws, overload balls, and long toss are a couple of the many variations we used. When designing practice the first question you need to ask yourself is how the athletes individual constraints are influencing the throw. The next question is what attractor needs to be destabilized. And the last question is how can I destabilize that attractor? It’s not as simple as saying to fix the issues that we identified John to have you need to do xyz drill and you’ll get xyz result. Skill acquisition is a constant relationship between perception of the task and environment and the individuals capacity to create action. It’s thousands of reps of exploration with the right constraints applied that lead to the final outcome. 16 oz 250+ foot single leg throws are as impressive as it gets for a thrower so if you can do the same or know someone who can do the same tag me in a video
