The story behind 🎶Operator🎶. His time in the military directly inspired some of his most famous musical hits: "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)": Croce wrote this heartbreak ballad after watching homesick soldiers line up in the rain at outdoor payphones to call home, often overhearing devastating "Dear John" conversations. "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown": The iconic #1 hit was inspired by real people he met in the service, combining the name of a tough sergeant at Fort Jackson with a private at Fort Dix who went AWOL and foolishly returned to base just to pick up his paycheck.

I got to see him, and Maury (The Guitar player…I believe), at UCLA in 1975, in the front row, about a few feet from them, in Royce Hall, at UCLA, for a similar free TV 📺 venue. The talented piano 🎹 player wasn’t there, but it was a cool 😎 deal.
