The kilns at Jingdezhen only became the "imperial ceramics site" AFTER the Jin conquered northern China in 1126-28. So... the tradition of ceramic excellence was passed from the original kilns near Luoyang south to Jingdezhen, & that happened around 900 years ago, not 1,300 years ago.

I'm a professional illustrator. In addition to my job, I like to do lots of different things for fun and relaxation, including construction and stone wall building. The work that these people do is exhausting and painful, because it is extremely high skill. For me, building a stone wall would be much less tiring and stressful than this. It's extremely impressive, unlike modern "art."

I love that they are still doing this by hand. Back in the 1980s we commissioned porcelain ware made in Taiwan, which carried the Republic of China (ROC) label in those days. The fine detail work they did there was amazing too!

Much of Asia still does a lot of hand crafting. Even in many places in Europe. I believe there is in the US also but because labor is expensive here, it is not visible enough except in small holiday towns in vacation spots.

My friend and I visited Jingdeshen last year for 3 days and checked out all the pottery and China vases and cups in the museums ,it is a fantastic country town/city well worth visiting

What made this possible? The Chinese drove bamboo pipes into the soil to tap natural gas pockets which they used to fire their kilns. Thousands of years ago. Smart people.

Mass production of everything in China has cheapened and robbed people of the knowledge in fact that Chinese goods just 100 years ago were prized for their craftsmanship and it still does survive today but we rarely see it passed all the garbage coming out of there.

They just do incredible work. I saw things made in China that blew my mind.

Interestingly, surprisingly, the artisans are not wearing uniforms. They're all individualistically dressed. Job perk?
