Highly recommend reading Fortunate Son by Lewis B Puller Jr. if you want to hear the whole story. One of the greatest books you'll ever read.

Thank you, Colonel. My Dad drilled these concepts into us from a very early age. Life is hard (it's harder if you're stupid!), but it is less hard if your mind is properly conditioned to overcome adversity.

In my opinion his leadership principles are his legacy, due to humans transformational nature. Often times that is not the case. It is like Omar Bradley and the War College versus Patton. I just got into with AI or Grok about it. Simplistically he called it endurance.

"Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller (June 26, 1898 โ€“ October 11, 1971) was a United States Marine Corps officer. Beginning his career fighting guerillas in Haiti and Nicaragua as part of the Banana Wars, he later served with distinction in World War II and the Korean War as a senior officer. By the time of his retirement in 1955, he had reached the rank of lieutenant general. Puller was a distant cousin to U.S. Army General George S. Patton.[34]He was an Episcopalian and parishioner of Christ Church Parish in Saluda and is buried in the historic cemetery there next to his wife, Virginia Montague Evans. Decorations and awards Puller received the second-highest U.S. military award six times (one of only two persons so honored): five Navy Crosses and one U.S. Army Distinguished Service Cross. He was the second of two U.S. servicemen (after U.S. Navy submarine commander Roy Milton Davenport) to ever receive five Navy Crosses." Source: Wikipedia I was off by one month to the day on his birthday. Meant to be a surprise to honor your beloved Chesty. He was a distant cousin to Gen. George Patton.
