Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival has repeatedly received high praise from Steven Spielberg. I think there are a handful of meaningful similarities between Arrival & Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I personally prefer Arrival, this deserved the Oscar for Best Picture & I think it’s one of the best science fiction films in Cinema history. I still can’t believe we’re getting a new Denis Villeneuve film this year.

John Carpenter recently came out & said he doesn’t like anything about The Substance, stating he’s not a fan of the film. Carpenter is the Horror King & a genius. But it’s a bummer he can’t put his support behind this film. I love The Substance & I love Carpenter. Such is life.

Steven Spielberg is returning to UFOs in a few weeks with his release of Disclosure Day. It’s a good time to revisit one of his best films, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As I’ve said before, I think this film is Spielberg’s best use of sound- sound is so key to this story.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind did not make my Steve Spielberg Top 10 Ranking & while I love this film to death, I have to stand by this decision. It’s a testament to the richness of Spielberg’s filmography. I couldn’t even find room for Catch Me If You Can on this list.

Jacques Vallee on being an advisor to Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and disagreeing with Spielberg on what the UFOs are “The main point of disagreement with Steven Spielberg. I met Steven Spielberg when he was half way through filming Close Encounters. We had a long discussion about what UFOs could be, of course for him the main point of the movie was for the UFOs to be extraterrestrial visitors. From my own point of view I am going to be very disappointed if UFOs turn out to be visitors from another planet, because I think it could be something far more interesting. What the UFO phenomena is teaching us is that we don’t understand time and space. Here are objects that are physical, that interact with the environment, that cause effects on the witnesses, and yet appear to be capable of manipulating time and space in ways that go beyond our physics understands today.”

Steven Spielberg has said that NASA sent him a 20-page letter discouraging him from making Close Encounters of the Third Kind, warning that the film could be “dangerous” and would fuel public anxiety about UFOs, and both NASA and the U.S. Air Force refused to cooperate with the production. The letter reinforced Spielberg’s interest in the subject and had the opposite of its intended effect.

Steven Spielberg says Disclosure Day IS NOT a sequel to Close Encounters “This is not a sequel to Close Encounters?” “Not even close. When I made Close Encounters, it was a wouldn't it be wonderful if kind of a movie. And I started with Close Encounters by starting with the ending. I wrote the ending of the picture first. And then to earn the ending, I created the characters and figured out how we could get to this place where this amazing sort of meeting between two civilizations occurs. But Close Encounters resembles Disclosure Day in this regard, there is a secret group in Close Encounters that is keeping this away from the general public's knowledge. And the location for this first communion between extraterrestrials and human beings is happening in a place where the government or the people who are powerful enough to stage a a train wreck with nerve gas on a derailment as an excuse to drive everybody out of the area. So this close encounter of the first, second, and third kind can be done in complete secret. And it stays secret. And at the end of Close Encounters, the world doesn't know what happened. The audience knows, the characters know, no one else knows what happened. Disclosure day is about how if somebody had the power and if somebody had possession of the entire archive of visual evidence of what's been happening for the last 80 years, what would happen if they decided to do a data dump across the entire world all at once? and the people who were trying to stop that data dump from happening. That is basically the core of this chase movie.”
